Who Will Care
For Your New Dog?
Before making the long term commitment of caring for a new
dog or puppy, determine who will be responsible for
feeding, walking, and taking your pooch to the vet
visits. Remember, Mom, no matter how much a child
declares he or she will take care of the new puppy, you will
ultimately end up being responsible for and caring for the
dog.
Factor this into your decision to bring a dog into your
home. Let your child do what she can but you are responsible.
This is especially pertinent if you work outside the home.
Where Will The Dog Stay?
Don't get a dog if you can't provide a fenced area for him
and think you can have him outside all day on a chain. This is
just plain hazardous and is no way to treat a dog. Dogs need
exercise. Who can exercise all chained up?
Dogs need to walk, and even run, to maintain a good
disposition and remain healthy. They are made to be
active and being confined in a crate or pen all day is
downright cruel to the animal.
Know Your Breed
Research the breed of the dog you are planning to get and
make sure that type of dog will fit well into your household
and the way you live. Some dogs are high strung and not
compatible in a family with small children. Others are
known for their laid back and mild dispositions. Learn
the characteristics of the breed that you are considering and
avoid possible heartache later!
